Kingfisher

The kingfisher is a small bird, just a flash of shiny blue and orange flying alongside a river. It is secretive and moves fast, so despite its bright colours it’s hard to see. It will sit still at the water’s edge watching for fish, then dive into the water with a plop and catch a fish with its dagger-like bill. Then it bashes the fish against a branch and turns it round to swallow it head first.

Kingfishers lay eggs in tunnels they make in the riverbank.

Winter is a tough time for kingfishers. If the rivers are frozen they cannot get food. They may move to find open water, so can turn up in all sorts of places.

Water pollution is a serious problem for kingfishers.
